What is the Ontario Immigrant Nominee program?

  • The Ontario Immigration Nominee Program (OINP) is an immigration pathway, administered by the provincial government of Ontario, that enables, international students, workers, and others who have shown an interest in settling in Ontario province after acquiring their Canada PR visa
  • To be eligible for OINP program, you should have the requisite skills, education, and experience that will show that you are capable of making a positive contribution to the economy of the province

Categories for OINP

The province of Ontario has in the year 2020, nominated a record high number of immigrants who sought Canada PR visas through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). The OINP has the following subcategories.

Employer Job offer Category

  • This category is intended for those applicants who have a permanent and full-time job offer from an employer who is located in the province
  • The category is further divided into the following streams
    • a.International Worker Stream

      The International Worker Stream enables skilled workers who have a valid job offer at either of the stipulated skill levels A, B, or O in the NOC from an employer in Ontario. This stream is open to all international workers who meet the eligibility criteria

    • b.International Student Stream

      The International Student Stream is intended for international students, who have a valid job offer in an occupation listed under the skill level A, B, or skill type O in the NOC. You can apply under the stream whether you live in Canada or out of it.

    • c.In-Demand Skills Stream

      If you are a foreign worker and have a valid job offer from an employer in Ontario for in-demand occupations, then you should be able to apply under this stream

      Human capital category

      The human capital category for Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program is divided into two sub-categories, the Ontario’s Express Entry and the International graduate streams

  • International Graduates’ Stream

    If you are an international student and have graduated from a university in Ontario, then you are eligible to apply for Ontario PNP under the international graduate’s stream. If you intend to apply under this stream, then you should have completed your graduation from a recognized university in the province. You should submit your application within two years of getting your degree. The following subcategories are available under this stream

    • a.Masters Graduate Stream

      This stream allows international graduates who have a master’s degree from the province to apply for provincial nomination under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program

    • b.Ph.D. Graduate Stream

      This stream allows graduates who have earned a Ph.D. degree from universities in Ontario to apply for provincial nomination under the Ontario PNP.

Business Category

The business category is yet another category under which an interested person can apply for the Ontario Immigration Nominee Program. The category has the following two streams that fall under it.

  • Corporate stream: You can apply for provincial nomination under this stream if you are heading an international corporation that is looking to purchase or expand an already existing business in the province.
  • Entrepreneur stream: You can apply for this stream if you are an entrepreneur residing outside Canada and are planning to buy an existing business or start a new one in the province of Ontario.

Ontario Express Entry Program

Ontario’s Express Entry program is intended for those applicants who have submitted their profile for the Express Entry program and are keen on settling in Ontario. The program consists of the following subcategories

  • French-Speaking Skilled Worker Stream: This stream is intended for French-speaking international workers who are proficient in English as well
  • Human Capital Priorities Stream: This stream is intended for international workers who have the required work experience, skills, education, and language proficiency to contribute effectively to the economic growth of the province
  • Skilled Trades Stream: This stream is intended for international workers who have the required skills to take up a successful trade in the province of Ontario

Eligibility Requirement for OINP

The following eligibility criteria should be met to meet the requirements for the Ontario Immigrant Nominee program

  • You should meet some or all of the eligibility requirements that have been outlined below on a case-to-case basis.
  • You should have completed the minimum education level needed for your stream, for example, you will need to have completed your post-graduation for the graduate stream.
  • You should not have any condition in your scholarship stating that you should return to your country after completing your study.
  • You should be legally residing in the province, for at least one of the two preceding years.
  • You should be able to demonstrate with sufficient proof that you have the funds or steady stream of income that can support you and your family in the province.
  • You should be able to show that you intend to settle in Ontario.
  • If you are applying from within Ontario, you will need to have and maintain a legal status of your stay in Ontario, such as a study permit, visitor record, or work permit.

Application Process for OINP

  • Make sure that you meet all the eligibility requirements for the category that you plan to apply.
  • Once you are sure that you are eligible for OINP through a specific stream, then you will need to file your application for Expression of Interest, through the OINP e-filing portal.
  • Once you receive an ITA from the province, you should proceed to make an application for nomination from the province.
  • On receiving the nomination by the Ontario Government, the next step is to apply for permanent residency through IRCC.
